Apple released 8 beta versions of iOS 5 before the final version and each version came with more bug fixes and more security patches. Even after that much hard work, iOS 5 still has vulnerabilities and bugs. This morning, a Canadian tech consultant, Ade Barkah discovered another bug in iOS 5 which allows anyone to access your image gallery even if the iPhone is locked with a passcode. Let’s know about this bug in detail.
To make it sure that you don’t miss any chance of taking the snapshot of the precious moments come in life no matter how fast they appear and disappear, Apple introduced a camera button on the side of iPhone. The response of this button is extremely fast in iOS 5 as compared to the devices running iOS 4. Simply press the camera button and in a blink of an eye, iPhone’s camera will be ready to take the snap. Now if you try to access the image gallery, a message will appear on the screen that “Unlock your iPhone to see all of your photos and videos.”
You must be thinking that this message will not let anybody to see the gallery, but if you are a game or app lover and keep setting the past dates in your iPhone in order to unlock difference apps and games or keep moving in different time zones then you are at risk.
Let’s test this bug. Simply go to settings and change the date to some time in past and lock your device. Now try to access the gallery after pressing the quick camera button. All of your private images and videos will be in front of you without any message of unlock the iPhone.
Here is what Barkah said after finding this bug.
“Apple should not rely on a simple time stamp to restrict image access . . . Changing the iPhone’s clock–[forward or backward]–should not affect its security. We can’t guarantee the clock will always monotonically [move] forward, and when it doesn’t, the system should fail-secure.”
Currently there is no fix of this bug from Apple or dev team. All you can do right now is to take care of the date and time which should remain up-to-date.
